WordPress Meetup Notes – Getting Started with WordPress

About 25 people came out to the Philly WordPress Meetup on June 29th. Thanks to the generosity of Jennifer Herman and Future Media Concepts (325 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia) we had a great place to dig into WordPress, discuss issues and answer questions. May session features introduction to Drupal

Drupal is a powerful open-source Content Management System. In the May 21 session, I provided an overview of this software, and we looked at a simple site that shows product reviews. Here are some resources for you to get you started:

RSS Feed Problem Fixed via Plugin

At least I hope it was fixed. Prez Don Arrowsmith let me know that in trying to read my posts via RSS, he saw an error message. I found and installed a plugin that fixes it – called, appropriately enough, Fix RSS Feeds. It worked, so I was willing to fork over $4.99 as a contribution.

6 WordPress Plugins for Better Functionality and Security

WordPress is flexible, powerful web-building software with a reasonable learning curve. One of its best features is the ability to add plugins, which are bits of code that can add features, functions, and security to a basic website. Web Design meets next Saturday – 02.19.2011

At the PACS Web Design group next Saturday, I’ll be showing some WordPress plugins. Plugins really extend the power of WordPress by adding functionality to the basic installation.

Installing plugins is easy, and takes no coding knowledge. There are thousands of free plugins available, and I’ll review a bunch of good ones to help you spend less time searching and more time building your WordPress website.

6 Great Resource Websites – to help you rock!

The huge amount of information on the internet can be as overwhelming as it is helpful. Here are some websites that provide excellent information to help you do what you want to do.

  1. A List Apart – alistapart.com
    • Articles and Topics. Take a look at the article on CSS Positioning 101. Note the topics: Code, Content, Culture, Mobile, and so on. See the Content topic, Brand Arts, on your About Page.
  2. Smashing Magazine – smashingmagazine.com
    • Many topics covered: design, code, content creation, graphic, video and more. Look through all of the Navigation links.
  3. Position Is Everything – positioniseverything.net
    • Position is Everything helps you understand browser problems (especially in Internet Explorer) and shows you how to deal with them. Very CSS oriented. And check out those links!
  4. Six Revisions – sixrevisions.com
    • Articles, freebies, great articles of interest on a variety of web related topics. You can spend hours reading this material and learn a lot doing it. Go to Articles and check out the topics on the right side navigation links.
  5. iStockPhoto – istockphoto.com
    • While this one is not free, you get a lot of value for your money. And you don’t need to spend very much at all. If you are building a site for a client, the client can be charged for any images you buy.
  6. Adobe’s Browser Lab – browserlab.adobe.com.
